Another thing Final Fantasy IX can learn from Avatar is the masterful balance between comedy, action, and drama. The two properties tackle very similar themes of destiny, duty, and one’s purpose in life.įinal Fantasy IX’s original story was split into three discs, which can easily be adapted into three seasons, just like Avatar’s initial three books. If done right, this adaptation could turn Final Fantasy IX into an animated classic, just like Avatar The Last Airbender.
Hopefully, we get to see more of Freyja’s history with her lost love Sir Fratley, more of Steiner and General Beatrix’s history together, and even the backstory of the game’s main villain, Kuja.
With the game originally only having enough disc space to tell its story, it would be nice for the animated series to flesh out some of the game’s side characters, beyond the three characters who received the most development, namely Zidane, Princess Garnet, and Vivi. Each party member is also clearly defined with their individual strengths and weaknesses. The most memorable aspect of Final Fantasy IX is the characters that you encounter, from the wild rogues of the Tantalus theater troupe, to the race of Moogles you meet in Madain Sari. What we’re hoping for is that Cyber Group Studios can keep the charm and wacky character designs from the original game, as well as keep the fantastical world design at the forefront of every major set piece. While it was seen as a downgrade back in the year 2000 when everyone wanted games to look as realistic as possible, this cartoony art style seems to be perfect for an animated series, and here’s hoping that nothing gets lost in translation. With the visuals of Final Fantasy IX designed by Hideo Minaba, the characters and world have a more fairytale-like aesthetic, instead of Tetsuya Nomura’s brand of contemporary streetwear and urban art direction that was used in Final Fantasy VII and VIII. So, how can an animated series take all of Final Fantasy IX’s best moments and adapt it into a cartoon? Well, here are some ways we think that the animators at Cyber Group Studios can flesh out the world and characters of this PlayStation classic.

This is why the game employs a more cartoony, chibi art style, instead of the shonen and realist artstyle that Final Fantasy VII and VIII were known for.
